Cold Room FAQs: Answered
How to ensure your cookware isn’t sabotaging your dish
For startups and small businesses, the option to rent a cold room instead of (or even along with) having one on site can often prove very beneficial. So what is a cold room, how can it be used and by who? We answer some key cold room FAQs:
1. What is a cold room?
A cold room is a walk-in storage room for goods which need to be kept either chilled or frozen. It's similar to a refrigerator but on a much larger scale.
2. Who uses cold rooms?
They can be used by businesses or individuals, anyone who needs to keep larger items or bulk items cold.
Typically, catering or food businesses will use cold rooms to store their back stocks of supplies, and their kitchen fridges for what they are using that day. The larger space also makes organisation easier, allowing for faster stock checking and counting. They can also be used by pharmaceutical companies.
In the food industry, there are numerous businesses that might use cold rooms, including:
- Pop up food stands
- Food box delivery services
- Catering companies
- Cooking class businesses
3. How are cold rooms maintained?
It is vital to maintain the proper temperature of a cold room while it is in use, because if the temperature is allowed to rise or fall too much, the products contained inside the cold room could become unfit for human consumption.
This is why we conduct regular temperature and safety checks on all our rented cold rooms. That way we can make sure that the room is secure and that the temperature is suitable for the products stored within it.
4. Is there a maximum or minimum time I can rent a cold room for?
There is no set minimum or maximum length of stay in a cold room, assuming it has not been prebooked by someone else. Before choosing a cold room, it is important to consider exactly how long you’ll need use of the cold room for, as well as the size of the cold room you will require.
Access to a cold room for a short period of time can come in handy if, for example, a large scale event is being organised, or if a business is experiencing technical difficulties and requires the use of alternative fridge or freezer space.
At Dephna, our cold rooms are available at a set size of 3m (length) x 3m (width) x 2m (height), which is big enough to fit 4-5 pallets. With 24 hour access and onsite parking, you’ll be able to use your cold room(s) at any time.
